In 1763, the grounds were invaded by a horde of treasure =hunters who claimed that their magic mirrors,bottles and other magic tools showed them great vaults full of gold hidden in the ground. The local priest objected to their devilish nonsense and they insulted & threatened him. They dug what he described as the "most terrible caves" (Mammoth and Carlsbad were not discovered then). Digging went on - until one of them, the least Christian of them, a certain Johann Drott, died when the pit he was digging in caved in on him. It took a day to find & drag out his body. He was given a suicide's burial.

Reality refused to co-operate with fantasy.

There were 2 other digging incidents in later years, and,after one man died when hit by a rock hurled by a dynamiting of outcrops in a field, the authoroities put a permanent ban on diggings.
